SAFE AND ACTIVE TRAVEL TO SCHOOL

STARS

STARS is TfL's accreditation scheme for London schools. STARS inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. The scheme supports pupils' wellbeing, helps to reduce congestion at the school gates and improve road safety and air quality. We are currently accredited the gold level award.

WOW

As part of this scheme, we are running WoW (Walk on Wednesday), where your child is asked by their class teacher how they travel to school every Wednesday. For your child to state that they are travelling actively to school, he/she must walk/scooter/cycle from their home or for at least ten minutes.

Each month, the data is collected and analysed. The infant and junior class with the most pupils actively travelling to school receive a trophy to keep in their class for a month. All pupils who actively travel to school on Wednesdays will receive a badge every month.

If you can’t walk all the way from home, then try parking your car ten minutes away from school and walking the remainder of the way with your child or getting off the bus a couple of stops earlier.

Meet our jtas

We have three Junior Travel Ambassadors. The role of a Junior Travel Ambassador is to help to ensure that Road Safety remains a high profile in our school. JTAs are chosen because they are committed to sustainable transport and understand the need for children to be safe when travelling to school. They work alongside Mrs Dada, the School Travel Plan Champion.

Reception's visit from our lollipop lady

In March 2020, Reception class had a visit from our school crossing patrol officer. She spoke to them about road safety and her role.

TRAFFIC SURVEY

In March 2020, the JTAs did a traffic survey. They focused on Shortway and Appleton Road. Have a look at the results below:

WOW badge competition 2020

Can another pupil follow in Franek's footsteps and win the next WOW badge competition and have their design worn by thousands in 2021?

The theme this year was 'Wonders of the World'. We received many designs and the JTAs had the hard job of choosing three winning designs to be sent to the Living Streets organisation. Well done to everyone who took part!

The winners are: Zofia with her design of Kiyomizudera Temple, Aaliyah with her design of the Statue of Liberty and Joyce with her design of mountains.

WOW badge winning deSign

In December 2019, we had the honour of wearing Franek's WOW badge but only if you travelled actively to school every Wednesday. Franek won the national WOW badge competition, something that has never happened at St. Thomas More before! This was a huge achievement and we are very proud of Franek. His winning design was made into thousands of badges and he was one out of eleven winners across the United Kingdom. Here is his design below:

In January 2020, Franek featured in the SE9 Magazine. Please see the article below:
